The Midlife Metabolism Mistake I See All the Time

1 min read

I’m Beth Panoff, FNP-C, a nurse practitioner specializing in longevity medicine. One of the most common patterns I see in midlife is a woman who is eating less, pushing harder, sleeping worse, losing muscle, and wondering why her metabolism feels broken.

The body is not a math equation only

Calories matter, but they are not the whole story. Hormones, sleep, muscle mass, insulin sensitivity, thyroid function, stress physiology, medications, inflammation, and gut health all influence how the body responds.

When the answer is always more restriction, women can end up with less muscle, less energy, poorer recovery, and more frustration.

Muscle changes the equation

Muscle is one of the body’s most important metabolic tissues. Preserving and building it is not optional in midlife. It is central to glucose control, body composition, and long-term resilience.

A better approach

Instead of guessing, I want to understand what is driving the change: labs, hormones, body composition, strength, symptoms, nutrition, sleep, and medication history. Then we can build a plan that protects metabolism instead of fighting it.

Next step

If your metabolism feels different and the old strategies are not working, start with a Comprehensive Consultation: https://www.arcadia-institute.com.
